Why US Resumes Should NOT Include Photos
1. Discrimination liability: US companies avoid photos to prevent bias claims based on age, race, gender, or appearance.
2. ATS systems reject them: Many Applicant Tracking Systems can't process images and may reject photo resumes.
3. Unprofessional perception: In the US, including a photo is seen as unprofessional or naive.
4. Recruiters will Google you anyway: If they want to see what you look like, they'll find your LinkedIn.
Exception: Creative industries (acting, modeling, some entertainment roles) where appearance is job-related.

When Photos ARE Expected
In many countries, resume photos are standard:
- Germany, Austria, Switzerland: Professional headshot expected
- France, Belgium, Netherlands: Common but not always required
- China, Japan, South Korea: Usually expected
- Brazil: Becoming less common but still seen
- Middle East: Common in some countries
If applying internationally, research the local norms. When in doubt, check LinkedIn profiles of professionals in that country.
Photo Best Practices (If Required)
If you need to include a photo:
- Professional headshot: No selfies or casual photos
- Neutral background: Plain white, gray, or blue
- Business attire: Dress as you would for the interview
- High quality: Sharp, well-lit, recent photo
- Appropriate size: Small (passport-sized), upper right corner
- No filters: Natural, unedited appearance
